The Ways of Her Home

Embracing the homeward call

Texas Thanksgiving

December 8, 2025

We had a fun Thanksgiving week with our daughter and her family in Texas!

We rented an Airbnb that would be spacious enough for their little family to join us and eat and hang out together. It was perfect!

The kitchen was everyone’s favorite. It was decorated so nicely and was super clean!

The den offered plenty of comfy seating for us to sit around and talk and watch movies and YouTube.

We even had our own porch kitties. It’s become a joke with our family that the animals always seem to find us wherever we go, hahaha.

But this little turkey was even sweeter than the cutest of kitties! Everyone had so much fun playing with him all week. He’s grown and changed a lot in the last few months and that personality has really come out!

My daughter said he’d just learned to sit up on his knees like this, and it was the most adorable thing ever. Would you look at those little wrinkly feet and tiny toe beans!

I took a big cooler with a frozen turkey, a frozen ham, and several frozen side dishes for our Thanksgiving meal. I also packed a container with pantry items and another one with paper goods and such.

The kitchen was pretty well equipped. Well, mostly. But for anything we didn’t have, we figured out another way, like using a Coke can to roll out my pie crust!

On Thanksgiving Day, we cooked and baked and feasted on a wonderful spread of all our favorite traditional dishes: turkey, ham, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, green beans, baked apples, creamed peas, salad, and some cornbread dressing my mom made to send with us because none of us could bear to be without her dressing for Thanksgiving. For dessert we had pumpkin pie and Kentucky Derby Pie, yum!

It’s not often that I get to cook a whole turkey so that was fun! It rendered several cups of juicy drippings which made a delicious gravy.

Glazed ham always looks so pretty before slicing.

We set an easy table since we weren’t at our own house and didn’t have our own dishes and decor, but the food was what we were all there for anyway! We enjoyed lots of other good food throughout the week as well. My daughter made us a delicious soup and cornbread dinner one night. We also had pizza, Texas BBQ (of course!), big breakfasts, snacks, popcorn, and lots of leftovers.

It was the best week being together and we’re thankful we were able to make it to Texas to be with our daughter, son-in-law, and grandbaby. I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving as well. Now, on to Christmas!

Well, thank you, but I certainly can’t take any credit since the Airbnb was already beautiful and had that centerpiece on the table for us. Win! All we did was put out paper plates and napkins!

Looks like a wonderful Thanksgiving! Your grandson looks adorable! I’d like to know how you got your turkey to look so picture perfect and beautifully bronzed! Everything looked delicious.

Thank you so much, Jenny! I started the turkey on 425 for the first 20 minutes to golden it and then turned it down to 325/350 for the remainder of cooking time, basting with butter and herbs every 30 minutes. As all women know, it’s hard to cook in an oven that’s not our own 😅 (we know our own ovens so well, don’t we!) so that’s why I had to adjust between 325 and 350 a few times until I could figure out if that oven ran on hotter or cooler side. The turkey thermometer helped too!

We did have the best week and the Airbnb was even better than we’d hoped! I must admit, I was a little nervous about it when we booked it even though it got great reviews, but it turned out to be perfect for us. Happy holidays, Heidi! ❤️

What a delicious looking meal and precious time together!! Of course the “piece-de-resistance” was the cute little turkey himself! How he has grown! Can’t wait to see him in person again! The Texas kitties were icing on the cake to remind you of the pets you left behind!!

Baby boy was the cutest little turkey!! He’ll be fun at Christmas! 🌟
Oh my, as if I don’t have enough animals at home. 😅 We were actually excited to have the kitties but I told the kids NOT to feed them. ☺️
