The Ways of Her Home

Embracing the homeward call

Blog Update

July 28, 2025

Hi, friends! Just want to let you know that I've made a couple of (hopefully) temporary changes to my blog while I work on some behind-the-scenes issues. Spammy comments are at an all-time high and even though mine all go to moderation where I can trash them before they even post, the amount I have to go through each week is crazy. At the start of summer, I was dealing with 30 a day. Now it's well over 100 in a day. I'm also getting emails from the same weird bots. So, for now, I'm turning off all comments (so I won't miss one of yours in the midst of the hundreds of spammos each week) and I've taken down my contact page. Since my blog is a hobby and not a job, I'm not in a rush to fix ... Read more

Snapshot Saturday: Fourth of July Fun

July 12, 2025

Our neighborhood puts on the best fireworks display each July 4th! And since so many neighbors around us shoot their own fireworks now, Crazy Joel has retired from his yearly shows, and we just enjoy everyone else's! It works out pretty well for us, haha. This year our friends walked over to eat hotdogs and watch fireworks with us. It was the best night! We let the kids swim while we waited for it to get dark. Joel and I commented to each other the next morning about how sweet it was to hear so many happy little voices in our pool. My son enjoyed grilling with Joel and I think he now has a new hobby. We had a couple of kinds of hotdogs with toppings and our friends brought ... Read more

Delicious Muffin Mixes (with my own spin)

June 30, 2025

I’ve found a couple of new muffin mixes recently that my family loves! These are gluten free if that’s important to you but that's not why we eat them. They're delicious! That's why. The Bettergoods brand is Walmart's knock-off of the more expensive healthy brands. It's still about $5 per box but that's $2-$3 cheaper than the name brands. And, did I mention, delicious! I first tried the Banana Nut mix while helping my daughter and son-in-law after the birth of their son, that sweet baby 🩵. I made it in the loaf form for something sweet after our dinner and leftovers for their breakfast or midnight snacking. And 2 am snacking because newborn nights….poor mama! You can make it as ... Father’s Day Weekend Recap

June 17, 2025

Happy Tuesday! We had a fun Father's Day weekend with a couple of family gatherings. Here are the highlights! Saturday night my side of the family came for a big BBQ supper. My husband, son, and I worked on house and yard throughout the day to get ready. My daughter is still recovering from surgery and wasn't allowed to do much which was a bummer for her because part of the fun of having company is the buzz around the house to get ready. My son worked so hard on the patio, cleaning and pressure washing. The kids/teens were planning to swim that night but this is what the sky looked like an hour before everyone arrived and then it started raining. It did clear up for a little ... Read more

Snapshot Saturday: A Little Country Life

June 14, 2025

Just a few photos from life in the country lately...... The deer have been out in the early mornings while I'm taking my walk. Many mornings lately have been foggy which looks so pretty hovering around the garden. I went out one morning with my coffee just to check on the garden, set my mug down to pull up a couple of weeds that caught my eye and ended up working for an hour and a half! When I finally came back to my coffee it was full of dead flies. Eww. I saw this little green guy on my potting table. I used to hate lizards but now I welcome them in my garden because they eat the bad bugs. And this sweet mama bird. I had this new birdhouse set on the fence waiting ... Read more

Strawberry Moon

June 12, 2025

Did anyone see the strawberry moon this week? I found out about it Tuesday evening so I looked it up and its peak was to be around 3:00 the next morning. There was a time when my kids were younger and all 3 of them homeschooling that we would have set an alarm, gotten up, thrown some quilts on the grass and made hot chocolate for a middle-of-the-night astronomy show! Well, I'm not saying those days are totally gone, but seeing as how there seems to be some kind of special moon every few months, I decided to let this one quietly pass while I slumbered. That is until 1:17 a.m. Barney was on the back porch and started barking and whining so I went out to see what was going on with him. ... Read more

Summer is Here and This is Where You Can Find Me

June 9, 2025

Hello, old friends! It's been a while. It was a busy spring and now we're moving into summer, ready or not. I'm ready. Spring brought soccer season, travel to DC to see our nation's capital and visit family, the end of another school year for both my son and my daughter who works at a preschool, two trips to Texas, annnnd a new baby boy born to my daughter and son-in-law in May! He's the sweetest little thing and my daughter and SIL are just the best new parents! I won't be posting pictures of him here so if you'd like to know what he looks like, just imagine the most beautiful baby boy ever and there you have it! Parents and baby are doing well, and we are so thankful to add this precious ... Read more

Back Home

March 31, 2025

I came home last night after being out of town the last few days. My "Sweet Home Alabama" sign welcomed me at the state line and even though there were a couple of more hours of driving to go, it felt like home was close. I was surprised at how many new signs of spring had popped up in just the few days I was gone. I snapped this photo of a field near our home. It's nice when you start to see familiar pieces of land. I noticed that this summer crop had been prepped while I was gone. Not sure if the seed is in the ground yet or not, but a plowed field is a sign that summer corn is definitely in our future! I opened my bedroom blinds this morning to see this pink burst of azalea ... Read more
