The Ways of Her Home

Embracing the homeward call

Upside Down Pizza

March 12, 2019

If you know our family at all, you know that every Friday night at our house is PIZZA NIGHT. Whether it’s just us at home or company is joining us, pizza (or some variation of it) will be served. Period. End of story.

Over the years, I’ve had a lot of fun exploring the many different styles and flavors of pizza. When my older girls were little, a favorite for them was Upside Down Pizza. I made this anytime we had a backwards day or we just felt a little silly.

I don’t know why I had forgotten about this one since it was once a favorite of ours. But it came to mind last week, and, much to my family’s delight, I decided to bring it back!! I think we’d all forgotten how wonderful it is! It’s also very simple to make!

Upside Down Pizza

Ingredients:

1 can of biscuits– regular or Grands

1 jar pizza sauce (sometimes I use more if we want it extra saucy)

8 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese

3.5 ounce package sliced pepperoni

1 pound sausage, browned and crumbled

1/2 stick butter

dried herbs and garlic powder

(I doubled this recipe and made an extra pan for a leftover night.)

Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9×13 casserole pan. Spread cooked sausage in the bottom. Layer the pepperoni slices on top of the sausage.

Spread the pizza sauce over the pepperoni.

Sprinkle the mozzarella over the sauce.

Using one can of biscuit per pan, divide each biscuit into two thinner biscuits. This will make 20 biscuits for one pan. Place in rows on top of the mozzarella. Melt the butter and stir in some garlic powder and dried herbs. Brush the butter mixture over the biscuits.

Bake in the oven until the biscuits are golden on top and not doughy underneath. It will take longer than the  package instructs since they are being baked on top of the other ingredients. If needed, depending on your oven, you can crank it up higher to 375 degrees.

After baking, let the pizza sit on the counter a few minutes to set up. Slice the servings in between the biscuit edges. You will need a fork for this pizza! It is more like a casserole.

I hope you will try this easy Upside Down Pizza! It is so scrumptious, and my family was happy I brought it back into the Friday night pizza rotation!!

I have more posts coming this week, including recipes from my cooking club I attended last night! The theme was Italian, and I’ll just go ahead and tell you, we ate really well!
