Embracing the homeward call

Scarecrow Treats and a Fall Bible Lesson

November 10, 2020

The following post is one I put together last year but did not get worked into my posting schedule before the fall season was over. I’ve just about missed it for this fall too!

Today I have couple of fall goodies that my son and I have been working on for his friends and cousins. I started doing these when my girls were younger so it’s been a lot of fun to repeat with my son.

Candy scarecrows are so cute to pass out to the kiddos for a fall treat! You just need a box of raisins for the torso, Smarties for the legs, Tootsie Rolls for the arms, a round candy for the head, and some raffia for the neck straw. Use hot glue to attach candy pieces together in the shape of a scarecrow. Of course I did all the hot gluing for obvious safety reasons, but I let my son sort the candies into groups…and eat a few!

Aren’t they adorable! And even though they’re all made with the same pieces, it’s cute to see how they each seem to have their own personality. Like God made us!

In years past, when I’ve taught children’s Bible class in the fall, I’ve made these scarecrows for a lesson on idols and not conforming to the idolatry of our world. I attached the following Bible verse:

“Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.” Jeremiah 10:5

The candy scarecrow was a good object for the kids to hold and look at while we talked about how the idols of the pagan cultures were nothing but manmade “dummies” that couldn’t walk or talk, and had to be nailed down so they wouldn’t topple. Powerless. We would then name the idols in our current culture and visualize them as silly scarecrows stuffed with nothing but straw.

This year we have them packed up with some other goodies to hand out to the younger cousins at Thanksgiving. We filled some turkey cups with Thanksgiving stickers, a fall scavenger hunt, colorful ink pens, and our cute candy scarecrows to keep the kiddos busy while they wait for lunch!

We also made Scarecrow Stew kits for my son’s small group friends to enjoy for a warm fall treat! Again, I started this when my girls were little. Just fill paper cups with some apple cider mix (we used K-cups for those who we knew had Keurigs and packets for those who did not), a mini pack of candy corn, cinnamon stick for stirring, and the following poem:

Scarecrow Stew

Scarecrows watch over as fall fills the air.

They love the smells that are everywhere.

So they put them together into this special stew.

Just add water and stir with the stick they added too.

Now when chilly winds come, sip your stew,

and savor the taste of fall as it warms you through!

(I searched the entire internet to try and find where this poem originally came from so I could give credit, but I couldn’t find anything!)

Each little kit included two servings of Scarecrow Stew. We dropped the filled cups into cellophane bags and tied them off with some ribbon and festive tags from Memory Makin’ Momma!
