The Ways of Her Home

Embracing the homeward call

Our First….Rock?

June 2, 2022

My daughter is getting married next week. NEXT WEEK! We are neck deep in wedding details, so I haven’t had time to blog about all her showers and parties but will do so after the wedding. For now, I want to share something funny that’s kind of an inside family joke but related to the upcoming marriage.

There are lots of “firsts” for a newlywed couple: “our first house”, “our first Christmas”, “our first pet”. But here’s a first you probably don’t know about unless you’ve seen a certain movie–a movie that is a family favorite of ours: The Long Long Trailer with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Because we love this movie so much and have laughed and laughed over one particular line (actually, we laugh over many of the lines), I planned a gift for the engaged couple that went along with that line.

In the movie, newlyweds Tacy (Lucille Ball) and Nicki (Desi Arnaz), purchase a trailer as their starter home to take out west where Nicki will be working. Along the way, Tacy picks up a rock from each special location with plans to make a border around their future patio. Upon accidentally sitting on a big hunk of rock on the couch, Nicki asks Tacy what it is, to which she dreamily replies, “Our first rock!”, and then goes on to explain why she’s collecting them.

So the gift? I gave the couple the movie on DVD and….yep, their first rock! My daughter laughed hysterically right away, knowing the movie reference. And of course we then watched the movie with our future son-in-law so he could see what in the world we were talking about. He loved it! He enjoyed it as much as we have, especially the rock part!

While we watched the movie, we ate a little feast of hot wings which inspired another new first for the engaged couple: their first tradition! They decided Sunday nights would be their night to eat hot wings and watch I Love Lucy. Sweet. I’m so happy for them! And my daughter says the rock is her favorite wedding gift, LOL!

Our family too owns this movie, so I totally get the, “first rock” reference! Love y’all’s family traditions and that they are continuing in the next generation!

Aww, I’m so glad to hear it’s one of your family movies too! Yes, family traditions are so important. We’ve encouraged them to make their own new traditions as they begin their life together.

You should watch the movie while you’re recovering, Missy! You can rent it on Amazon Prime. 😊
