Makeshift Kitty Litter Box

July 19, 2022

My apologies for the topic of this post. If you’re not a kitty owner, there are still some cute Floyd photos at the end. I’ll try and keep this as polite and non-offensive as possible.

I once said I would NEVER have a little box in my house. Pretty funny, right? Well, ok so I do have one now but this time I mean it when I say I will not ever have TWO litter boxes in my house, haha! I plan to have both cats eventually use the same litter box but have heard it’s best to wait a month or two before new kitty invades older kitty’s “powder room”. Still, I don’t want to pay for a new box now when they will end up only needing one in the long run. So, my solution was to make a temporary litter box until both kitties are ready to share.

This photo has nothing to do with the post topic. But I just couldn’t bring myself to have a photo of a litter box for the first photo in this post! This photo is much nicer to start with, don’t you think? So sweet.

Ok, let’s get started. My only supplies were a bag of kitty litter, two aluminum pans (I buy a stack from Costco), and a kitty absorbent pad.

Step 1- Poke holes in one of the pans. An ice pick works great.

Step 2- Pour some cat litter in the pan with the holes. Place the absorbent pet pad in the bottom of the other pan.

Step 3- Place the pan with the litter on top of the pan with the pad. After kitty “goes”, the holes in the top pan allow for drainage to the bottom pan with the absorbent pad. For the “other” job, scoop as normal with a scooper. Replace the pad as needed.

This makeshift litter box has worked out great! And when the kitties do start sharing a bathroom, I can just toss the temporary aluminum one. Not only does this work for a new kitty situation but could also be used for travel or pet sitting.

Ok, enough potty talk. Now let’s see some kitten pics! What a cutie!

One night we were Facetiming with our daughter and son-in-law and Floyd was just a buzzin’ around until he wore out and fell asleep in my arms. Such a baby!

Floyd is just too sweet! There’s nothing like a cuddly, curious kitten. That is such a great idea – and I’m with you on not wanting to buy another box when it’s only needed for a short period. I’m going to remember this the next time I need a temporary litter box!
