The Ways of Her Home

Embracing the homeward call

Little Neighbors are Big Blessings

July 18, 2024

My sister, Katie, was the baby of the family and she was such a cute little girl! The neighbors thought she was pretty cute too. One day the lady next door called my mom to tell her how much she enjoyed hearing Katie sing “Jesus Loves Me” at the top of her lungs while swinging in our back yard! So sweet.

I think about that story now as I have my own little neighbors to enjoy, and they are just so precious. There are a lot of children on our street, and they sing and play and ride their bikes all around the neighborhood. Here a couple of the sweet ways they’ve blessed us lately.

Sunflower Day!

Our sunflowers have consistently stayed turned towards our neighbors’ yard all summer. My daughter and I have commented on how it must tickle the kiddos next door to have these giant sunflowers looking right over the fence at them every day. I was working in the garden one afternoon and could hear the children swimming and playing in their pool with their parents. I heard the little girl joyfully call out, “Daddy, Daddy! Guess what! It’s a SUNFLOWER DAY!”

Lovin’ on Liberty!

A few more doors down our sweet neighbor girls are just the craftiest sisters and have brought me so many little handmade treasures over the years- keychains and bracelets and yummy baked goods! They love our dogs and this week they made Liberty some melted bead art. The older sister made her a tag for her collar with the letter “L”, and the younger sister made Liberty a rainbow bone! How adorable! They also made my daughter some earrings and a beaded phone strap while she was babysitting them.

I hope I always have little neighbors. What a delight! Children are such a blessing.

Oh, and Katie, you’re still cute!

You are truly the blessing! My girls loved have Madeline babysit; she crafted with my girls and played with my boys! Puts my heart at ease to know they were cared for so well ❤️

Amen to little children being a blessing…for so many reasons!! Recently in a nail salon, I was having fun engaging in conversation with one of the owners’ daughters who was excitedly turning 7. The lady next to me observed and finally commented that she believed I was a teacher! I replied that I was now retired, but still gravitated toward young children!
She replied that she herself did not have children, but worked at a local private school and enjoyed children that way! Children remind us there will always be sunflower days and time for art!!
