If you’ve got a little girl, tween, or teen who loves to craft, glittery glow jars are an fun summer project she will love! With their colorful flickery glow, they create an enchanting tablescape for summer evenings on the patio.
My Country Girl first made some of these to surprise me with for Mother’s Day last year, and has been making them ever since for a number of gift-giving occasions. I think she originally found the idea on the American Girl website.
If your girl is like mine, and crafting is a daily occurrence during her summer break, I know how helpful it is to find new ideas for keeping those creative hands busy.
So, I asked CG to make a new batch of glittery glow jars so she could share this idea, step by step, in a post.
If you have jars, Modge Podge, glitter, and a sponge brush at home, you already have everything you need.
So, let’s get started!
First, brush Modge Podge inside the jar, around the sides and bottom.
You don’t want it too thick or drippy.
Next, pour some glitter into the jar.
Start with about a tablespoon (or so) for a small jar. You can add more later, if needed.
Place the lid on the jar and shake the glitter all around, coating all sides and the bottom. If you need to add more glitter at this point, you can.
You will still see the white streaks of the Modge Podge. That’s okay because it will turn clear as it dries. Remove the lid and leave open until it’s completely dry.
While the inside of the jar is drying, brush Modge Podge on the lid and sprinkle on the same color glitter as the jar.
When dry, place a battery operated candle light in the bottom of the jar and secure the lid on top. With the artificial candle, you can use these anywhere! I like to keep mine in my bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, or coffee station.
The original idea of these jars is for them to be used with the battery operated candles so that the glittery lids can be kept on, but I didn’t have enough of the artificial candles on hand to use for these photos and had to use wax candles. BUT, if you prefer the wax burning candles, make sure they are in clear glass votives before dropping them in, and leave the lids off while they burn!
They are so beautiful at night, aren’t they?!
CG is planning to make some winter glow jars this Christmas with white glitter to look like snow!! We’ll be back before the holidays to show you how they turn out, so stay tuned!
