Cultivating female friendships is rewarding yet sometimes tricky. My friend, Kelli, and I have seen the difficulties that our teen girls can go through with making and keeping friends. We wanted to encourage and mentor our daughters in this area as they go about their high school activities with co-ops, sports, etc., and have been getting together every other Sunday for tea and sweets while discussing a book which covers the topic of friendship with meaningful and practical advice. Girls’ Club: Cultivating Lasting Friendship in a Lonely World is authored by mother and daughters, Sally, Sarah, and Joy Clarkson and is certainly not written to one age group but to all girls and women who desire deep, lasting friendships. This book and its companion guide are ideal for any size group. We have ideas to one day expand our Girls’ Club group to many teens and moms but are starting out with just our own high school daughters to test the waters. So far, we are all thoroughly enjoying this book and our discussions!
Not only do we all enjoy great discussions in our Girls’ Club, but we also enjoy sipping hot tea and munching a sweet treat. Because both moms and our girls are quite busy (high school is crazy sometimes) we keep our snack simple. Since we meet at my house and since I have an endless supply and variety of teas, I take care of steeping a pot for each meeting. And we take turns with the other mother/daughters providing the sweet treat. Sometimes it’s homemade and sometimes when we’re short on time, we just enjoy the delight of selecting a goodie from the bakery!
This particular week my daughter was really wanting to bake but our weekend was full, so we stopped in Fresh Market after Sunday morning worship (it’s a little dangerous having a Fresh Market right by our church!) and picked out the prettiest pumpkin roll! It was delicious!
And have you ever tried Fresh Markets yogurt pretzels? Oh, they’re such a treat and a favorite of our family’s. They have seasonal flavors, and these apple cider ones are so good! Other fall favorites are the maple pretzels and pumpkin spice pretzels. Yum.
For our tea selection I steeped Tazo’s Pumpkin Chai which was perfect with our pumpkin roll!
We all enjoy using a fancy teacup for our sipping and munching. And talking….lots and lots of talking! Teen girls are so much fun!
This is how we usually end up, around the coffee table and always going back for seconds.
We’ve been so proud of how well our girls have opened up in the discussions. They are sweet, sincere, and soooo smart in their comments! Our prayer is that this time together will not only deepen their relationship with each other but will equip them all for going out and cultivating friendships for the rest of their lives.
By the way, you don’t have to get a group together to benefit from this book! I read this book a couple of years ago just for myself and was greatly encouraged. You’ll benefit from the perspective of the three Clarkson ladies: Sally in her late 60s, Sarah in her late 30s, and Joy in her 20s. It’s a tough world and loneliness is at an all-time high. We must be intentional in cultivating true Godly friendships. The Girls’ Club book is an excellent resource in helping you do just that!
Have a blessed day, friends!
