The Ways of Her Home

Embracing the homeward call

Fluff the Nest Friday: The Evening Report

January 20, 2023

Hello, again! I don’t know that I’ve ever posted twice in one day but if you saw my morning post, then you know I promised a follow-up post this evening! If you didn’t catch my morning post, we got new carpet this week which caused a huge upheaval all around the house and we set out to finish or at least make some big progress in putting things back in order after school today. So, here’s how we did today, and I’m going to give the “after ” pics first and then the “before” pics.

We got the den back in order and even put out a few new purchases I made at TJ Maxx this week: a few fresh throw pillows, a basket, and a new blanket. Since the Christmas decorations are packed away, I’ve got some decor gaps that need to be filled like new candles on the mantle, but I’ll work on that in the coming weeks.

And below is the “before”.

The kitchen was not only a wreck as far as needing organizing (as you can tell from the photo below), but also in need of a good scrubbing as well.

The dining room took a while, but considering what it looked like early this morning, it was worth the time!

We took a lunch break and then tackled my son’s room. We had already worked a while on it this week so there wasn’t too much to finish up. I challenged myself and the kids to each donate 100 things from each of our bedrooms! I’ve heard of people doing this and it sounds like a lot, but honestly it didn’t take long to reach 100 in his room: cars, toys, books, clothes, and shoes too small. You get the picture. After his bedroom was done, he was released for the remainder of the day to go play with friends.

We got the halls cleaned up too. Above is my son’s boxed-up 100 items and below shows an example of how the hallways were full of obstacles this morning.

I only got half of my bedroom finished. I’m still working on my closet which has our bookshelf in it, and it’s packed with books! I hold on to books for so long just in case I need to refer to them again, but today I decided that “just in case” is a heavy burden when it comes to books.

And here’s an area I did NOT get finish…..

The coffee/tea closet was packed with stuff from our bedroom closet which is mostly out now, but it’s left the space a mess still. I don’t even know if I’ve ever mentioned this little “room” on my blog before. It’s basically a closet space under our staircase that was converted into a martini bar by the previous owner. We are big coffee and tea fans in our family so that’s what we use it for.

Well, that covers the downstairs areas, and my daughter spent the day tackling her areas upstairs. I didn’t get any before and after pics up there, but she also has been working on her 100 donated items.

All in all, it was a productive day! I still have some work to finish this weekend but I’m happy to have made some progress, and I’m even happier with my new carpet! It’s soft and clean and makes our bedrooms look and feel fresh. And Mr. Floyd Kitty is just happy to have found my new basket in the den!

I love these before and afters!! I know all of that hard work felt so good to enjoy over the weekend! And I love all of the comments too. January must be the perfect time to embark on that journey – we’re working on the small spaces over here that always hold a little too much and more than we need! Thanks for all of the inspiration ❤️

Thank you so much, Tabitha! And I’ve enjoyed seeing your monthly goals! They are doable and reasonable—enough to get things done but with some flexibility. I’m bad about biting off more than I can chew so I have found your lists helpful to me!!

Your “nest” looks great, and I know you will feel so much better once you’ve dropped off your donations and everything is back in its proper place. Thank you for sharing your weekend with us.

The Lord has been working on my heart about the overabundance of things I have, so I cleaned out my closet this weekend and have bagged up about two-thirds of my wardrobe to donate to charity. It feels wonderful! 🩷

Yes! Yes! Yes! You are so right, Holley! It feels good to clean out and even better to help a charity with our donations! Ours help the organization that once gave a home to our adopted son so we love supporting them in this way. ❤️

Thank you, Denise! It does feel a lot fresher!
And oh yes, the coffee/tea area is a fun little space! Our friends enjoy it too, even the little kiddos (for hot chocolate!) ☕️💕
