It seems that as soon as I dust my house, the dust just starts to immediately collect again on every surface. We live in the country with a lot of dirt and dust getting tracked in the house and I always felt like that’s why the dust collects so quickly. But I remember my husband’s grandmother telling me once that she had to dust a lot with her house being in the city because of all the traffic coming by and stirring it up along their streets. So, I guess homes are just dusty no matter where we live!
Have you heard about the homemade dusting spray that not only cleans, disinfects, and leaves a shine, but also keeps the dust away for a whole month? Well, I gave it a try! There are many versions of this all over the internet so I’m going to share the one I tried and my review of it.
Homemade Dusting Spray
2 cups water
1/4 cup vinegar
1 Tbsp. olive oil
3 drops dish soap
Several drops of citrus essential oil or any other essential oil you like.
Mix ingredients in a spray bottle and shake before each use.
My review: In my experience, the spray smelled wonderful, pulled the dirt off the surface effortlessly, and, as you can see in the photos, left a lovely shine without being greasy at all! I cannot say that it repelled dust for a whole month, but it did keep a clean shine longer. After just one week I could feel a little dust starting to collect, but couldn’t see it yet so that’s an improvement and I’m happy about that. I will definitely use it again, but might try cutting back on the vinegar or leaving it out entirely for concern over the acidity stripping the finish over time.
And I have to share a little about this pretty antique table. Joel’s sweet Aunt Brenda gave this to us when she downsized her home, and it’s called a harp table due to the base being shaped like a lyre. She explained to us that you can find them with or without spindles which represent a lyre’s strings. And interestingly enough, she searched until she could find one without the spindles. Any guesses why? She said she didn’t want to have to dust them! And now that I’m the owner of the harp table, I’d like to thank her that smart foresight on her part!

The formula I used didn’t call for dish soap and had a higher ratio of vinegar to water — 1/4 cup vinegar to 1 cup water. I use this stuff all the time! It really does work well. We heat with wood only and live in New Hampshire (meaning we burn a LOT of wood), so it seems we create a lot of dust. But I have been more pleased with this. It works better than any commercial product I have tried. I even bring it along to my volunteer job at The Wilds of New England whenever my tasks there involve dusting!

This is great info! I’m so glad to hear from someone else who has used the spray, even if our formulas are slightly different. I’ll have to give your “recipe” a try! Thanks, Mrs. T!
