I always enjoy sitting on my front porch in the summertime with my red geraniums and my American flag flapping in the breeze! There is something so summery and so Americana about it all!
Today is Flag Day, and I must admit, although I have a deep respect for our country’s flag and its history, I don’t really give Flag Day much regard.
Today is also my husband’s and my 23rd wedding anniversary!! When we set our wedding date on the calendar, we joked that he should always be able to remember our anniversary since we were getting married on Flag Day. The joke being who even knows when and what Flag Day is?
Not to sound unpatriotic because we LOVE our good ole USA and all the other dates that honor our country’s greatness, those who founded it, and those who’ve fought valiantly for it. Fourth of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day have always been days we put that flag out and wave but proudly! But Flag Day??
It wasn’t until I started reading through history books with my children that I gave it much consideration. I’m not going to give a history lesson here, but this week I read a good timeline summary of how Flag Day came to be, and so I thought I’d share the link in case anyone else is curious about it. This is just a quick overview, so it won’t take much of your time to read. I think it’s a history that all Americans should be aware of.
As I read through this timeline, I was a little saddened to think of how much our country’s view of the flag has declined. At a Memorial Day concert a few weeks ago, I couldlanced around during the National Anthem and noticed many people still putting their hands over their hearts as the song played and the flag waved. I was encouraged to see a parent here and there bending over to instruct their child in doing the same. Maybe if we go even further and share the history behind it and what it represents for our nation, our children will understand the importance of honoring the American flag. Friends, let’s teach the next generation and not let them forget!
And to my dear husband of 23 years, Happy Anniversary!!
(If you’re all wondering, he did remember our anniversary as he does all our special dates!)
