Good Monday morning! I’d planned to have a nice post out early this morning, but we came in from camping yesterday and I wasn’t feeling my best. By last night I had a full-blown migraine and had to go to bed, so I wasn’t able to work on this last night. I’m just going to quickly share a few photos and give a little detail about our weekend. So sorry for the lack of order in this post!
We have a yearly tradition of camping with two other families each October. We love camping with our friends and have special memories from each year. They are all great campers and we’ve learned a lot of handy camping tips from them!
We go to a local campground which is also a historic site by the river so there is a fort and a cabin for the kids to explore during the day. There was quite a crowd there this year but our friends who arrived first managed to reserve enough spots for us. This is our family’s area with our tent and hammocks set up. Our son and daughter prefer to sleep outside in the hammocks and Joel and I have the tent.
Some of our favorite time camping is sitting around the campfire with everyone while we eat, talk, and laugh! The mamas coordinate the meals. The first night is hotdogs, chips, apples, and baked beans, and the second night is always a soup potluck. Each mom brings a favorite soup, and we sample them all. This meal is always soooo good! This year’s soups were chili, potato, and creamy tomato with all the fixins!
The evenings are beautiful with the moon glowing, fire blazing, and string lights sparkling.
Have you heard of Funky Flames? We’ve been buying these from the camping isle at Walmart the last few years to keep on hand all fall and winter. They make beautiful colors in your campfire!
The days were just as lovely as the evenings. We had gorgeous weather!
As I mentioned before, this campground is part of a historic fort and the grounds are full of old trees covered in Spanish moss. Very typical of what you see around our rivers in the south.
Here is an early morning peek at the foggy river.
The kids all love the outdoors! There is so much to explore and play. They bring their bikes and have many adventures. Below is a little hobbit house a couple of the girls built. So sweet.
Arts and crafts are also enjoyed. This little guy went from bike riding to crafts, back to biking, back to crafts. I thought it was so cute that he just left his bike helmet on, I had to get a picture.
We love that our friends have little ones! They are just so cute!
There is an incredible donut shop nearby and it’s become tradition for the men to go early on Sunday morning to get donuts for breakfast. We southerners love our Krispy Kreme donuts, but y’all, this donut shop has Krispy Kreme beat. They are the most incredible donuts ever.
After breakfast we gather around the campfire one last time for a special time of worship. We sing, pray, and listen to a message by one of the dads. It’s the most wonderful way to close a great weekend with friends. Afterwards the kids play a little more and we all pack up our stuff to go home. We love these families and are so thankful for their friendships! Can’t wait for next year!
