The Ways of Her Home

Embracing the homeward call

Colonial 4th of July Table

July 3, 2019

I’d like to wish everyone an early Happy Independence Day, and naturally I’m going to say it with a table setting!

This is a table I quickly put together last 4th of July. We had some neighbor friends walking over for fireworks that evening, and since we were grilling hamburgers for ourselves, we asked them to come early and join us for dinner.

The plan was to eat outside on the patio, but the heat and humidity were crazy high that day, so we decided to enjoy the meal inside and go out after sunset to watch the fireworks.

With a change in plans, I started pulling anything from my cabinets that was red, white, or blue. Before I knew it, we had a very patriotic vibe going on in the dining room!

Country Girl had her own wild flower patch growing just beyond our back fence, so I asked her to go cut anything that was red, white, or blue (we added in some gold sunflower as a filler). We arranged them loosely in my white soup tureen and stuck in some small American flags.

As a history lover, I really liked the bit of colonial flair this table displayed. And it came together so quickly, I think only the Minutemen could have thrown this table together faster!

But the grand finale (other than the fireworks later) was the Flag Cake the girls and I have been making since they were little bitty!! This is a recipe from Barefoot Contessa, and it’s delightfully sweet, creamy, and fruity!

And finally came the fireworks!! Happy Birthday, America!!

We’re usually at home on the 4th, but this year we’ve been invited to a celebration for the 100th anniversary of our friends’ family farm! Wow, what an exciting occasion to celebrate!! I can’t wait!

It is very decadent! It takes a some time, but so worth it, and we only make it once every year or two. We won’t get around to it this year. Happy 4th, my friend!! Hope you’re having a wonderful trip!!
