My younger daughter is playing soccer this spring which is keeping us on the go! When we saw that she had two games in my sister's home city, the two of us were excited to plan an overnight trip to visit with Allison. The day before leaving, we got word that the games were cancelled due to rain, but my sis said, "Come on anyway!" And we did! It was a very quick and fun 24-hour trip. Allison and her family live in a beautiful older home in a historic district. The photo above is of the stone courtyard in back of her house. I took this photo looking out her back door. Such a lovely and peaceful spot under this gorgeous saucer magnolia! If I'm not mistaken, I believe she transplanted this ... Read more
An Alabama White Christmas
In Alabama, we rarely have snow, but we do have the white sands of our beautiful beaches! Our family headed to Gulf Shores, Alabama a couple of days after Christmas for a 50th birthday getaway for my husband. We could not have asked for a more gorgeous week to be there! We've always preferred to travel in off-seasons, no matter where we go, when crowds and rates are at their lowest. Even for a winter beach trip, there is plenty to do to make it an enjoyable vacation. We had no agenda, but just went from one leisurely activity to the next. Walking on the beach is a must for any season. My girls and my son did swim in the ocean one day, and had a great time, but my husband, my ... Read more
A Happy 50th!
I'd like to wish a Happy 50th Birthday to the man who loves, leads, protects, teaches, entertains, and provides for our family--my wonderful husband! Joel is rock solid, tends to our needs, offers wise counsel, lives by the Word, leads us in Bible study, washes copious amounts of pots and pans, is a work horse in the yard, and brings stability during our most fragile moments (and with 3 women and a 9-yr old boy in the house, emotions can certainly run high at times!) We celebrated early with a trip to the beach with the kids and Joel's sweet mama, the woman who delivered her big New Year’s Eve baby 50 years ago today! For some fun entertainment on our trip, my mother-in-law brought Joel's ... Read more
Christmas at Biltmore
The first week in December, my girls and I had the pleasure of taking a trip with friends (Missy and her daughter) to The Biltmore Estate--a getaway originally planned for last spring which got postponed due to the pandemic. My sister-in-law and niece were planning to join us as well, but, sadly, had to back out at the last minute due to illness. We missed them greatly! I'd like to share some images from our trip, starting today with photos of the house, and following up with two more posts on the gardens and the dining (yes, food is always a big part of the travel experience!). When I've blogged about Biltmore in the past (on my old blog), I always included some history on the rooms and ... Read more
A Stroll Through Huntsville Botanical Gardens
I'm delighted today to bring you photos of our recent trip to the beautiful Huntsville Botanical Gardens in Huntsville, Alabama! My two daughters, my son, and I went to visit my sister and her family a couple of weeks ago. After having to cancel travel plans for The Biltmore Estate in March, and then for Virginia and DC in May, we were all thankful to still be able to get in our summer trip to my sister's home--a tradition we've kept since even our oldest children were just little ones. One of our favorite excursions while there has always been the Botanical Gardens. When we were just young mommies to babes in strollers, my sister and I would push our little nappers around while we ... Read more
Looking Back: Fall 2019
Hello, friends! This week I'm going to play a little catch up here on the blog. I'd like to begin with some highlights of our past school year, but even just the highlights would be too much for one post, so I'm going to do this in three posts: fall, winter, and spring. Today I'll share FALL 2019! We started our twelfth year of homeschooling in late August 2019. The chalkboard below was our photo prop for first-day-of-school pictures. One of our favorite ways to end the summer season and start a new school year is with an outdoor performance by our city’s symphony! My oldest daughter and her friend invited some of their college friends who were new to the area as a way of ... Read more
Biltmore in Bloom
In my last post, I shared photos from our tour of the Biltmore house! Today, I'm offering a virtual stroll through the enchanting gardens around the estate's property. I captured these photos with my iphone, but now I'm really wishing I'd taken my "real” camera. Also, as with the last post, I'm fighting the urge to dive into the details and history of each image! However, I'll try and go through these in steady pace. Just the walk alone from the house to the gardens is quite a pleasant experience. There are so many beautiful areas to pass through, beginning with this wisteria-covered pergola. I’m so fond of this side view of the house when looking back after exiting the wisteria walk. The ... The Beauty of Biltmore
Oh, we had a wonderful time in lovely North Carolina two weekends ago visiting the Biltmore Estate in Asheville! And before I go any further, I have to say that I got so tickled when I previewed this post and saw my tagline "Looking well to the ways of her home" over the image of the Biltmore house! Well, I can't imagine looking well to all the ways of this massive home, but it sure is fun to visit! I would love to go through these photos with lots of detail and history, but I'm playing catch-up this week for a lot of time lost sick in bed this past weekend, so this post will be more pictures than words. Today I'll share photo highlights from our walk thru of the house, and my next post ... Read more
