In Alabama, we rarely have snow, but we do have the white sands of our beautiful beaches! Our family headed to Gulf Shores, Alabama a couple of days after Christmas for a 50th birthday getaway for my husband. We could not have asked for a more gorgeous week to be there!
We’ve always preferred to travel in off-seasons, no matter where we go, when crowds and rates are at their lowest. Even for a winter beach trip, there is plenty to do to make it an enjoyable vacation. We had no agenda, but just went from one leisurely activity to the next.
Walking on the beach is a must for any season. My girls and my son did swim in the ocean one day, and had a great time, but my husband, my mother-in-law, and I were content to just watch with our toes in the sand. And with all the wind we experienced on our walks, my daughter coined a new term: Muppet Hair!
We also enjoyed collecting seashells,
playing lots of card games and working a puzzle,
and reading!
We also were blessed with breathtaking views of God’s glorious creation!
My mother-in-law, who has taken many cruises, said our balcony view felt just like we were on a cruise ship. We were very close to the water, and our balcony made for a perfectly peaceful place to relax, read, watch the ocean, and eat our meals.
For most of our meals, we ate in the condo and kept it pretty simple. But for Joel’s birthday meal, seafood was in order! Our dishes at The Original Oyster House were so pretty, I took a photo of each plate before everyone dove in. It was all delicious, and we were so full when we left!
Not only did we savor the delicious seafood, but this view (below) from our table as well.
I just love the pastel beach houses! Here are some more that could be seen from the other side of our condo.
My favorite views of all, though, were the sunrises and sunsets.
Just stunning!
Evenings were quiet except for the sounds of the waves crashing in on the beach.
I’m thanking God for this refreshing retreat as we closed 2020 and made ready for 2021.

The beach during the winter is my favorite time! The color of the sky and ocean is different and so relaxing with fewer people. Original Oyster House is one of our favorites! Looks like a wonderful trip! Tell Joel I said, “Welcome to the fabulous 50’s”!

Yes! The winter sky, the low crowds, and easily getting seated at Oyster House! And I don’t think most people are aware how great the beach is in winter, but let’s keep it our secret so the crowds will stay low. 🤫😄
I’ll let Joel know he’s been officially welcomed to the Fabulous Fifties!! 🤩

Thanks, Kelli! It was a quick trip (2 nights), but just what we needed. Happy New Year to you and your sweet family!
