The Ways of Her Home

Embracing the homeward call

A Winter Baby Shower

January 20, 2025

Friends, I have some sweet news. My daughter and son-in-law are expecting their first baby–a BOY! We are all just as tickled as we can be! They were here during New Year’s week and before they headed back home, we had a little gathering of the ladies from our family plus a couple of close college “sisters” to shower the new mommy and her little one.

As you can see, our girl is radiating the joys of an expectant mother! Poor thing had a rough first trimester but is now feeling better and able to eat (and enjoy!) more foods.

Every January I like to have out my blue dishes, fresh oranges, and pine branches. Prior to the shower date my daughter mentioned that my usual winter decor would be perfect for a baby boy shower. And she was right!

Blue feels like a winter color to me and oranges give such a freshness after the holidays.

My husband had brought me some white roses earlier in the week for a “just because” (sweet guy), so I wintered them up a little for the shower with pine branches which always smells so good in the house.

Our mother-to-be requested cheesecake and hot tea which was a nice switch from all the holiday foods we’d been eating throughout the previous weeks.

I’ll share the recipe for the cheesecake in another post, but it was just a plain cheesecake with two different crust options: pecan crust and graham cracker crust.

There was fresh fruit, whipped cream, and 3 different sauces (white chocolate, dark chocolate, and caramel) for topping our slices of cake. And rosemary cashews are a family favorite.

My daughter loves to bake and offered to make her delicious gluten-free snowflake cookies. We didn’t even tell the guests they were gluten-free because you wouldn’t know it! They’re so good!

The hot tea blends offered were “Snowflake” and “White Chocolate”. You can zoom in to see their descriptions.

And there was orange water for a refreshing alternative.

I enjoyed every bite of my sweets and every sip of my tea!

And of course there were gifts! So sweet to see all the little baby items all on display.

As guests left, they could take a wooden snowflake to save for their tree next Christmas. It’s exciting to think about the newest family member joining us for Christmas ’25!

It’s going to be so much having this little cowboy around and he’s going to have the best parents!!

And….we are SO excited, as well, since this will be our first time to become great-grandparents!! That little tyke will be much loved and well read with his collection of shower books alone!! This retired teacher Meme loves it!! To quote from the book Corduroy, by author Don Freeman, “Look, there’s the very bear I’ve always wanted!” He’s going to love having that story read to him while snuggling his own Corduroy bear! He’ll be the very little bear this family has always wanted!

Yes, he sure will! The corduroy series was a favorite of ours when my children were little. Such a sweet little bear! I collected all the books as the kids were growing up and have them tucked away in the attic for the grands to enjoy!
